Raccoon Hat

I made this raccoon hat on a request from a picture that was shown on Pinterest. I couldn't find a pattern for it so I kinda improvised.

The sizing on it ended up being a little weird. I went for a 22" hat, it was not very tight. I think if I had MR'd 8 instead of 6 and done it in multiples of that 8, I would have had a better sizing. Oh well! It turned out all right in the end anyway.

I used double-stranded Caron Simply Soft on every piece, and an I hook.

Round 1: MR 6
Round 2: 2 sc in each - 12
Round 3: 1sc in first, 2sc in next, rep around - 18
Round 4: 1sc in two, 2sc in next, rep around - 24
Round 5: 1sc in three, 2sc in next, rep around - 30
Round 6: 1sc in four, 2sc in next, rep around - 36
Round 7: 1sc in five, 2sc in next, rep around - 42
Round 8: 1sc in six, 2sc in next, rep around - 48
Round 9: 1sc in seven, 2sc in next, rep around - 54
Round 10: 1sc in eight, 2sc in next, rep around - 60
Round 11-25 (16 rows): sc around
sl st to the first stitch of the previous round and tie off.

Outer ears (in gray):
Leave long tails at each end for sewing. Ch1 to turn at end of each row.
Round 1: ch 9, sc in 8
Round 2: sc in each - 8
Round 3: sk 1, sc in 5, sk 1, sc in last - 6
Round 4-5: sc around - 6
Round 6: 2sctog, sc in 2, 2sctog

Inner ear (in black, or pink)
Round 1: ch 7, sc in 6
Round 2: sc in each - 6
Round 3: sk 1, sc in 3, sk 1, sc in last - 4
Round 4: sc around - 4
Round 5: 2sctog twice - 2
Tie off.

Black mask for eyes:
Round 1: ch 13, hdc in 12
Round 2: sk 1, hdc in 11
Round 3: hdc in 10, sk 1, hdc in last
Round 4: sk 1, hdc in 10
Round 5: hdc in 8, sk 1, hdc in last
Round 6: sk 1, hdc in 8
Round 7: hdc in 6, sk 1, hdc in last
Round 8: sk 1, hdc in 6
Tie off, leaving long tail for sewing entire patch on.

Eyebrow:
Working on the black part of the mask, from the narrow end to the bigger/fatter end
sc in first 6 or so stitches, hdc in the next 2, dc in 5 or 6. I didn't take good notes but the eyebrow should be thick along the top part of the eye patch.

Eye (white part)
Round 1: MR 6
Round 2: 2sc in each - 12
Round 3: sc in each - 12
Tie off.

Eye (black part)
Round 1: MR 6
sl st to first stitch
Tie off.

Attach the black part of the eye to the center of the white part of the eye. Then attach the white part of the eye to the black patch. I put a little bit of stuffing in there to make them buggy. Don't overstuff though!

Nose (in white):
Round 1: MR 4
Round 2: 2sc in each - 8
Round 3: 1sc in first, 2sc in next - 12
Round 4: 2sc in next two, 2sc in next, rep around - 16
Round 5-7 (3 rows): sc in each - 16
Tie off, leaving a long tail.

Gray stripe for nose:
Ch1 to turn at end of each row.
Round 1: ch 5, sc in 4
Round 2-3: sc in each - 4
Round 4: sk 1, sc 1, sk 1, sc last - 2
Round 5: sk 1, sc 1 - 1
Round 6: sc in 1

Black tip of nose:
Round 1: MR 4
Round 2: sc in each - 4
Tie off.

  2. Hi, JT! For attaching, I just used a yarn needle and sewed it on.

Did the pattern seem easy enough to follow? How did your sizing turn out?

  3. Since this is the first project i ever started making, at first the hat Part came out nice, but too small but that was because i was in the habit of pulling my yarn tight with each stitch. After tho, everything came out beautiful. One thing however is that i made different eyes. Mine were the happy anime eyes so it came out looking like this: ^_^ i don't know if i can post a picture.

  6. You're welcome, Lee Ann and Emily! I hope the sizing works out. Let me know how it goes. I may need to alter it a little/have it tested if the hats come out too big. Just measure it as you go and try to keep an eye on it. :)
