Unicorn Earflap Hat

So here is my take on the unicorn earflap hat. It is just the basic hat that you'd use for pretty much anything, joined at each end of the round (so that it looks more straight and not spiraled like my "Peruvian hat".

The small adult measures approximately 20-21". The adult size measures approximately 22-23". Make sure you measure and check your gauge/size. You may crochet looser or tighter than me (although I am pretty tight), so just keep that in mind too.

Materials:
Rainbow colors, plus white and gold (for horn).
H hook
Tapestry/yarn needle

Abbreviations: (In US terms)
ch - chain
hdc - half double crochet
hdc2tog - half double crochet two together (decrease stitch)
sk - skip
sl st - slip stitch
sc - single crochet
mr - magic ring (can also chain 2 and work stitches into 2nd chain from hook. I just prefer magic ring. See youtube for videos on it to show you how if you do not know this way yet. It's great!)

Please note: The ch2 at the beginning of the rounds count as your first hdc. :)

For small adult (20-21"):

Row 1: MR - hdc 8
Row 2: ch 2, 2hdc in each stitch, join with sl st to beginning ch2 - 16
Row 3: ch 2, 2hdc in the next stitch (remember, your ch2 is your first hdc, so put the 2hdc's in the next stitch over), *hdc in next, 2hdc in next* repeat from * to * around, join to beginning ch2 - 24
Row 4: ch2, hdc, 2hdc in next, *hdc in 2, 2hdc in next* repeat from * to * around, join to beginning ch2 - 32
Row 5: ch2, hdc in 2, 2hdc in next, *hdc in 3, 2hdc in next* repeat from * to * around, join to beginning ch2 - 40
Row 6: ch2, hdc in 3, 2hdc in next, *hdc in 4, 2hdc in next* repeat from * to * around, join to beginning ch2 - 48
Row 7: ch2, hdc in 4, 2hdc in next, *hdc in 5, 2hdc in next* repeat from * to * around, join to beginning ch2 - 56
Row 8: ch2, hdc in 5, 2hdc in next, *hdc in 6, 2hdc in next* repeat from * to * around, join to beginning ch2 - 64
Row 9-17 (9 rows total): ch 2, hdc around, join to beginning ch2 each time - 64
Switch to red yarn.
Row 18-19 (2 rows total): ch2, hdc around. Fasten off.

Still with red yarn, from the seam count 24 stitches to the right. Start working back to your left now.

Row 20: ch2, hdc 48, turn - 48
Row 21: ch2, hdc 48, turn - 48
(Now for earflap part)
Row 22: ch2, hdc 18, hdc2tog, hdc 3, hdc2tog, hdc3, hdc2tog, hdc 18, turn - 45
Row 23-24: ch2, hdc in 15, turn - 15
Row 25: ch2, sk first stitch, hdc2tog, hdc 10, hdc2tog, turn - 13
Row 26: ch2, sk first stitch, hdc2tog, hdc 8, hdc2tog, turn - 11
Row 27: ch2, sk first stitch, hdc2tog, hdc 6, hdc2tog, turn - 9
Row 28: ch2, sk first stitch, hdc2tog, hdc 4, hdc2tog, turn - 7
Row 29: ch2, sk first stitch, hdc2tog, hdc 2, hdc2tog, turn - 5
Row 30: ch2, sk first stitch, hdc2tog twice - 2
Fasten off.

For the other ear flap, attach yarn on other side and repeat above from row 22. When you get to the last row, instead of cutting yarn, just sc all around the bottom/outer edge of the hat to give it a finished look.

For the braids:
I used 1 strand of each of the 6 colors, approximately 18" long (make them as long or short as you wish). I then pull the strands through one of the bottom stitches on the ear flap. With the hat on your lap and the strings toward your body, fold the strings in half and use 4 strands in each part to braid.

For the mane:
I used 16" lengths, although I have seen pictures where they are shorter, etc. I put 5 strands in each part I pulled through, and did 2 rows of each of the colors. (So I pulled 5 strands in through the seam on one row, knotted it. I pulled 5 more strands of same color on the row below it, knotted it. Then changed colors. You can make the mane longer by maybe doing 3 rows, if you want.)

For the horn:
Row 1: ch12, join to first ch with a sl st
Row 2-6 (5 rows total): sc around - 12
Row 7: sc2tog, sc 1, repeat around - 8
Row 8-11 (4 rows total): sc around - 8
Row 12: sc2tog around to close
Fasten off.

For the ears:
I don't really like these ears because they are flimsy/floppy, but it was all I could come up with for now without them looking wide like a cat ear. Maybe I can update this soon, or if you have a better way to do it, let me know!

Row 1: ch10, sc in 2nd chain from hook across - 9
Row 2-3: sc in each - 9
Row 4: sc2tog, sc in 2, sc2tog, sc in 1, sc2tog - 6
Row 5: sc in each - 6
Row 6: sc in 4, sc2tog - 5
Row 7: sc in 3, sc2tog - 4
Row 8-9: sc across - 4
Row 10: sc2tog twice - 2
Row 11: sc2tog - 1
Fasten off.

For the adult size (22-23"):

Row 9: ch2 hdc in 6, 2hdc in next, *hdc in 7, 2hdc in next* repeat from * to * around, join to beginning ch2 - 72
Row 10-18 (9 rows total): ch 2, hdc around, join to beginning ch2 each time - 64
Switch to red yarn.
Row 19-20 (2 rows total): ch2, hdc around. Fasten off.

Still with red yarn, from the seam count 24 stitches to the right. Start working back to your left now.

Row 21: ch2, hdc 53, turn - 53
Row 22: ch2, hdc 53, turn - 53
(Now for earflap part)
Row 23: ch2, hdc 17, *hdc in 3, hdc2tog* repeat from * to * 3 times total, hdc 21, turn - 50

Row 26: ch2, sk first stitch, hdc2tog, hdc 12, hdc2tog, turn - 15
Row 27: ch2, sk first stitch, hdc2tog, hdc 10, hdc2tog, turn - 13
Row 28: ch2, sk first stitch, hdc2tog, hdc 8, hdc2tog, turn - 11
Row 29: ch2, sk first stitch, hdc2tog, hdc 6, hdc2tog, turn - 9
Row 30: ch2, sk first stitch, hdc2tog, hdc 4, hdc2tog, turn - 7
Row 31: ch2, sk first stitch, hdc2tog, hdc 2, hdc2tog, turn - 5
Row 32: ch2, sk first stitch, hdc2tog twice - 2
Fasten off.

For the other ear flap, attach yarn on other side and repeat above starting from row 23.

(So I pulled 5 strands in through the seam on one row, knotted it. I pulled 5 more strands of same color on the row below it, knotted it. Then changed colors. You can make the mane longer by maybe doing 3 rows, if you want. I would imagine for this size, 3 rows would look good. The hat I have pictured above is the small adult, so doesn't count for the added row for length and such.)

Fasten off.
